| Position Statement On the Withdrawal |
| of U. S. Troops From Iraq |
On September 11, 2001, I wrote about taking strong military actions against those responsible
for the all the attacks against U. S. civilians at the World Trade Center Towers, the Pentagon,
and Flight 93. I supported our invasion into Afghanistan because I thought that if we had
evidence that Al'Quida was the terrorist organization that planned and executed these horrific
acts then we should attack them and put a halt to their terrorist activites especially, in
Afghanistan, where they were headquartered. In 2003, I supported the invasion into Iraq because
I was aware of the terrorist sponsorship by Sadam Hussein and I was concerned that he would
provide Al'Quida with weapons of mass destruction. Since 2003, I have listened to all the
excuses for the lack of any success in stabilizing Iraq and the reluctance of the policy makers
to establish the conditions that would mean victory in that war. After over fours years, Iraq
has lost over five million refugees that have escaped from Iraq. The Iraqi security forces are
still not adequate to provide for their own safety. The country is being devastated by their
thousand years on-going secular civil war and our troops are stuck in the middle of it. I
think that because we are looked upon by many Iraqis as an invading occupation force then our
position in Iraq is untenable and I think that we have no acceptable alternative left except
to call a halt to all U. S. military operations and withdraw our forces from Iraq as soon as
possible. To fill the vacuum, we could ask the United Nations to send in a peace-keeping force,
just as they did when the Israeli Defense Forces invaded southern Lebanon to fight the Hezbollah.
